How do you replace the light or light cover on a flush mount ceiling fan?

Cut power at the breaker, let the shade cool, then remove the screws or twist-lock that hold the cover. Replace a screw-in bulb with the same base and a wattage the socket lists. Replace a glass cover with the same fitter diameter. A sealed LED light kit has no bulb. If that kit is dead, replace the light kit or the fan, not a lamp.

Cover types

Fan light covers attach in one of three ways: two or three thumbscrews through a glass lip, a twist-and-lock notch, or a threaded center finial under a bowl. The replacement glass has to match that fitter. A bowl from another brand often will not catch the screws. Integrated LED panels are part of the housing. The cover may still come off for cleaning, but the light source does not unscrew.

Replacement steps

  1. Switch the breaker off. Wall-switch off is not enough if the canopy is crowded and you may touch a conductor.
  2. Wait until the glass is cool.
  3. Support the shade with one hand. Loosen each screw a little at a time, or turn the shade counterclockwise if it is a twist lock. Remove a center finial only after you are holding the bowl.
  4. For a bulb kit, note the base (E26, E12, or a GU type) and the maximum wattage printed in the socket. Fit an LED at or under that wattage.
  5. Seat the new cover fully before you retighten screws. A cocked glass buzzes and can crack.
  6. Restore power and test the light switch only.

Stop if wires are brittle, the socket is browned, or the glass is cracked in the metal ring. That is a kit replacement, not a bulb swap.

Questions people ask next

Can any glass bowl fit a flush mount fan?

No. Match the fitter width and the screw or finial style. Measure the opening before you order glass.

The new bulb will not light. Is the socket bad?

Try a known-good bulb first. If the fan still runs and the light lead is dead, the pull-chain switch, the light limiter, or a sealed driver has failed. Replace that part. Do not keep swapping bulbs.
