How difficult is it to install a ceiling light fixture?
Replacing a ceiling light on an existing, sound box is a straightforward job if you can turn the breaker off and match ground, neutral, and the switched hot. Call an electrician if the box is cracked, the cable is damaged, there is no equipment ground, you need a new box, or the old fixture is a fan on a light-only box.
- Turn the breaker off and confirm the wires are dead.
- Support the old fixture and disconnect it.
- Confirm the box is rated for the new fixture weight in the manual.
- Connect ground to ground, white to white, and the fixture hot to the switched hot.
- Tuck the splices in, mount the canopy, and restore power.
Stop if you see aluminum wiring, scorch marks, or more hots than the new fixture has leads.
