How do I replace a ceiling light fixture without changing the wiring?

You can replace the ceiling light on the same cable when the existing box and conductors are sound. Reconnect the new fixture to the wires already in the box. Do not reuse brittle or scorched conductors. Damaged cable is an electrician job.

1. Breaker off. Confirm the box is dead.
2. Photograph the old splices.
3. Land ground to ground, white to white, and the fixture hot to the switched hot.
4. Use a connector rated for that bundle. No bare copper outside it.
5. Confirm the box can carry the weight stated in the fixture instructions.

A second switched hot or aluminum cable is not a simple three-wire swap.
