How do I remove the cover from a flush mount ceiling light fixture?

Turn the breaker off, support the shade with one hand, and release the thumbscrews, twist lock, or center finial that holds it. A flush-mount cover is not pulled straight down. Forcing it cracks the glass or strips the stud.

1. Switch the breaker off and let the shade cool.
2. Thumbscrews: loosen each a little at a time while you hold the glass.
3. Twist lock: turn the shade counterclockwise until the notches clear.
4. Finial: hold the bowl and unscrew the center nut.
5. If it will not move, stop. The fitter may be painted shut or the wrong cover was forced on.
