Can a modern ceiling fan with light be controlled by a wall switch?

Yes. A modern ceiling fan with light can be controlled by a wall switch, and that is the normal install. One switch can supply power to the whole fan. Two switches can split the motor and the light if the cable has two switched hots. A remote still needs the wall switch left on, because the receiver lives on that power.

Which wall control to use

  • Single on/off switch: feeds the fan. Pull chains or a handheld remote then pick fan speed and light.
  • Two switches: one for the motor lead, one for the light lead. This needs two hots in the ceiling box.
  • Fan-rated wall control: sets speed and light from the wall. It must be the model the fan manual allows. A standard bulb dimmer is not a fan control.

Install notes

  1. The ceiling box must be fan-rated.
  2. Turn the breaker off before you land wires.
  3. If a remote receiver is in the canopy, do not add a second dimmer downstream of it.
  4. Label the wall plate so the next person does not put the motor on a lamp dimmer.

Questions people ask next

Why does the remote die when I turn the wall switch off?

The switch removed power from the receiver. Leave that switch on and use the remote. If you want the wall switch to be the only control, remove the receiver and wire the fan as the manual’s switch diagram shows.
