Can the fan and light be controlled separately?

Yes. A flush mount ceiling fan and its light can be switched separately if the fan has separate leads and you give each lead its own control. That control is either two wall switches, or one switch plus a receiver that splits fan speed from the light. One switch feeding both leads turns the fan and the light on together.

What separate control requires

The fan motor lead and the light lead must land on different switched hots, or on a receiver that has separate outputs. You also need a neutral and an equipment ground in the ceiling box. A fan remote does this inside the canopy: the wall switch supplies power, and the remote chooses fan, light, or both.

Three ways to split them

  1. Two wall switches. Use a ceiling box that already has two switched hots, often black and red. Land the fan lead on one and the light lead on the other.
  2. Fan remote or wall control. One hot in the ceiling, a receiver in the canopy, and a remote that sets speed and light level. The wall switch should stay on or the receiver loses power.
  3. Pull chains only. Each chain toggles its own function. You still walk to the fan. Chains do not replace a code-required wall switch where your local code asks for one.

Do not put a fan motor on a dimmer made only for bulbs. Motor hum and failed controls are a common result. Use a control the fan maker lists for that motor. A light dimmer is fine only on the light lead, and only if the LED kit is marked dimmable.

Lights you can dim on their own circuit

If you want a dimmable fixture without a fan receiver, use a light that is wired to its own switch:

Questions people ask next

Can I add a remote later?

Yes, if the canopy has room for the receiver and the fan’s leads are still separate. Turn the breaker off first. Match the receiver voltage to the fan.

Why do both come on when I flip one switch?

The fan lead and the light lead are tied to the same hot. Split them onto two switches or add a receiver.
