Can ceiling light fixtures be installed on a dimmer switch?
Yes, if the ceiling light or its bulb is marked dimmable and the dimmer matches that driver. A fixture that does not say dimmable should sit on a plain on/off switch. A mismatched dimmer causes flicker, buzz, or a short dimming range.
- Read the word dimmable on the fixture or the lamp.
- Use the dimmer family the maker names, often TRIAC or ELV. If the sheet is silent, use an on/off switch.
- One low-watt LED can sit under the dimmer minimum load and flicker.
- Do not put a fan motor on a bulb dimmer.
The light flickers only when dimmed. Is the fixture bad?
Usually the dimmer and the driver disagree, or the load is too small. Try the listed dimmer or a plain switch before you replace the light.
