Are modern ceiling fans with lights dimmable?

Some modern ceiling fans with lights are dimmable, and only on the light circuit. The fan motor is not dimmed with a bulb dimmer. The listing has to say the LED kit or bulbs are dimmable, and it has to name a compatible control: the fan’s remote, a fan-rated wall control, or a TRIAC or ELV dimmer if the driver says so. A fan that does not say “dimmable” should be switched on and off only.

What actually dims

The light lead can dim. The motor lead needs speed control from the fan’s capacitor, remote, or a control made for that motor. Putting the whole fan on a standard LED dimmer often causes buzz, flicker, or a dead remote. If one wall control runs both, it is usually a fan control with a separate light dimmer, not a single lamp dimmer.

Check before you install a dimmer

  1. Confirm the word dimmable on the fan or the bulb, not only on the dimmer package.
  2. Use the control brand the fan manual lists.
  3. Keep the motor off any bulb-only dimmer.
  4. If the light flickers at low level, raise the dimmer’s low-end trim or change the control. Do not keep a flickering LED on a mismatched dimmer.

Questions people ask next

Can I dim the fan speed with the light dimmer?

No. Fan speed uses a different control. A light dimmer on a motor can overheat the control.

The remote dims the light but the wall dimmer does not. Which is right?

Use the remote if that is what the fan shipped with. Remove the wall dimmer from that circuit so the two controls do not fight.
