Are ceiling light covers universal?
No. Ceiling light covers are not universal. A cover fits only when its fitter diameter and attachment match the fixture: thumbscrews, a twist lock, or a center finial. Two bowls can look alike and still fail to catch the screws. Glass is heavier, so a weak thread will not hold it.
What has to match
| Check | Why it fails if it is wrong |
|---|---|
| Fitter diameter | The lip misses the screw line or the ring |
| Attachment style | A finial bowl cannot replace a twist-lock shade |
| Depth | The bulb touches the glass and can crack it |
| Listed lamp wattage | A hotter lamp than the fixture allows overheats the shade |
A complete light avoids the match problem
Can one glass fit every flush mount of the same brand?
No. Brands change fitter size between series. Match the measurement on your fixture.
