How do I choose the right size ceiling light fixture for a room?
Add the room length and width in feet, and use that sum as a starting diameter in inches. A 10 by 12 foot room points to about a 22 inch fixture. This is a widely used lighting-design rule of thumb, not a code requirement. Then check lumens and ceiling height.
| Measurement | What it decides |
|---|---|
| Length plus width, in feet | Starting diameter, in inches |
| Floor area | Lumens. A common retail guide is about 10 to 20 lumens per square foot for general light |
| Ceiling height | Flush mount on an 8-foot ceiling. A drop only where people do not walk into it |
A long hall may need two smaller lights. Over a dining table, many designers size the fixture to about one-half to two-thirds of the table width.
- Small crystal LED ceiling light for an aisle
- Mini round flush mount
- 8-light sputnik chandelier
- Ceiling lights
Does a bigger fixture always look brighter?
No. Diameter is scale. Lumens are brightness. Read both.
